Isaiah 4: A Vision of Restoration, the Branch of the LORD, and the Coming Kingdom

Isaiah chapter 4 wraps up the judgment of chapter 3 with a beautiful image of the coming Millennial Kingdom. It opens with a strange but powerful line:

“Seven women shall take hold of one man…”

In context, this follows the humbling of the women of Zion in chapter 3. Their pride has been stripped away, their security gone. Now—broken and humbled—they cling to the original design God intended: women desiring partnership, covering, and identity under a righteous man. They say, “We will provide our own bread and clothing—just take away our reproach.”
It’s a picture of desperation meeting restoration.

But suddenly, the whole tone shifts:

“In that day the Branch of the LORD shall be beautiful and glorious.”

This “Branch of the LORD” is unmistakably Messianic. It points directly to Jesus reigning in His Kingdom. Under His rule, the land becomes fruitful again. The survivors of Israel—those who remain in Zion—are called holy. Everyone recorded for life in Jerusalem is marked out by God Himself. And that blessing will not be limited to ethnic Israel; it will extend to all nations who enter the Kingdom.

Isaiah then describes God personally washing away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansing the bloodstains of Jerusalem. How will He do this?

“By a spirit of judgment and a spirit of burning.”

This is unmistakable Tribulation language—purification, refinement, the fire that prepares the remnant for glory.

Then Isaiah gives one of the most stunning images in the entire book:

“The LORD will create over all of Mount Zion… a cloud by day, and smoke and the shining of a flaming fire by night.”

Just like the Exodus—when God visibly dwelled with His people in the wilderness. That same supernatural covering appears again, but this time it is permanent: a canopy, a shelter, a refuge. God’s glory hovering over the mountain, over His assembly, over His redeemed people.

It feels like Eden restored—humanity dwelling under God’s direct presence, creation made fruitful again, and holiness marking everyone who lives in Jerusalem.

Isaiah 4 is short, but it opens a massive prophetic window into the coming Kingdom of Jesus Christ.
